Mobile Mondays: Wild Tamer

The star of this week’s Mobile Mondays is Wild Tamer, an RPG which puts you, a simple druid in charge of leading a whole host of wild and prehistoric animals on a quest to defeat the evil that has corrupted them and save the lands. A fairly simple fantasy tale with the unique angle of having everything other than you in this world be an animal of some sort is definitely interesting. Let’s take a closer look at Wild Tamer.

Gameplay

Wild Tamer’s core gameplay is extremely simple. Hold and drag to move the druid around the map and walk close to groups of wild animals to battle them. Once defeated they can either be recruited to fight for you or (as harsh as it sounds) farmed for their resources. Those resources can be used to buy better and more powerful gear such as masks or staffs, and those make you as a druid more powerful allowing you to battle more dangerous creatures and eventually recruit them. Climbing up this sort of mythical food chain and building up your army of animal followers all the way from small mice to ferocious beasts such as giant bears or huge sea monsters is strangely satisfying and beats the generic mythical creatures such as goblins or demons. Without spoiling too much of the story the 5 areas you must venture through on your quest are tough enough and large enough in scale to keep you occupied for a long time after your initial download and the epic scale of Wild Tamer is something I haven’t felt in a mobile game for a long time.

Story

Druids used to protect the world and locked away an evil force in order to do so. Now when that evil has escaped and infests the land by turning the wild creatures to evil, you the last druid must stop it. Like I said, its a fairly standard fantasy tale but its the creatures you come across in Wild Tamer that give it a unique feel. Seeing normal earth animals like mice, pigs, and deer being used as mythical soldiers was strange yet unpredictably cool and even something as simple as you being a ‘druid’ rather than the typical ‘mage’ went a long way to making Wild Tamer feel different. If you’re looking for a new RPG to play in your spare time because you’re sick of the same old fantasy genre you should seriously check out Wild Tamer.

Graphics and Sound

Wild Tamer has this beautiful hand-drawn look to it that instantly reminded me of games such as Don’t Starve. I will say one of Wild Tamer’s artistic choices is both a gift and a curse. The entire game has this fairly dull color scheme. There’s a fair bit of variety with browns and greys all the way to blues and pinks but that dull, darker tone gives the game a slightly dull vibe overall. I will say that tone perfectly fits the narrative with the world being infested with dark magic but as the player, I would like to see some brighter colors every now and then.

Progression

I found progression in Wild Tamer to be a little slow especially because your character moves fairly slowly and sometimes fighting tougher groups of animals can result in quick deaths for you and your followers. This resulted in me having to watch add’s for coins in order to buy more animals to get me started up again. This is by no means a pay to win game, and I believe you could easily play this game for completely free but it will be a long process. If that is something you like the sound of then you won’t have a problem but this slow progression might be a turn off for most players later down the line.

Overall Wild Tamer is a really interesting mobile RPG. Its artistic and narrative choices feel unique and I enjoy its style even if at times it can get a little boring. The progression is really what will make or break this game for you. If you’re willing to splash a couple of dollars here and there on this you may get a smoother ride, if not Wild Tamer is still perfectly playable but expect a very long road ahead of you.
